Direct Vision Standard

Launching in October 2019 the Direct Vision Standard has been designed to make the streets of London safer for pedestrians and cyclists. The Standard comes into force 12 months later and affects ALL 12 tonne and above vehicles that enter London, with a £550 per day fine for none compliance. It is something that companies have to take very seriously.

The area that this is being enforced is much more that inner London, it stretches all the way out to the M25 in places. Have a look at the map which shows you the areas where regulation is being enforced.

From October 1st 2020 ALL vehicles over 12 tonne GWT will have to have a permit to drive into the controlled area and to get this permit is going to cause a lot of issues.

To get a permit all most all of your HGV’s will need TfL’s recommended Safety equipment installing on them including Cameras.

Are You Ready For DVS 2020

According to the FTA over 60% of all HGV’s over 12 tonne in weight will be BANNED from entering most of London without a permit.

Use our FREE HGV Star Rating service to find out what safety equipment that you need to install on to your HGV’s and apply for your permit

Under the new regulations it is YOUR responsibility to KNOW that the cameras are working before you send HGV's into the Enforcement Zone

Enforcement Zone

The Enforcement Area is large, it covers all of Inner London and outer London along with all of the main trunk roads coming into London. We have added the M25 to TFL’s DVS 2020 map to give you a better idea of the enforcement zone.

DVS 2020

The Direct Vision Standard (DVS) for heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) is a new vision safety standard for all vehicles over 12 Tonne. It is based on a Vision Star rating supplied by the manufacture of the vehicle and indicates how much a driver can see directly from their HGV cab in relation to other road users. The DVS forms part of the Safety Permit for all HGVs over 12 tonnes entering London. This permit can be applied for from October 2019

The Application Process

There are 2 or 3 steps to apply for a TfL London’s HGV permit depending on the Star rating for your vehicles. According to TfL over 35,000 HGV’s that currently enter London will be Zero rated and a further 94,000 + will be 1 or 2 Star. The Star rating is important as it defines what safety equipment that you need to fit to the vehicle.

Enforcement to start in 2021

TfL have announced that the enforcement of the DVS 2020 regulations will be introduced from 1 March 2021 at the earliest. The exact start date of the enforcement will be confirmed by October 2020.

TfL regognises that the industry is way behand in the rollout of the safety measures required and they have stated that in the light of the Covid Epidemic this will give the freight industry more time to meet the new standards.
